At this time we will divide our large single-side wave form into individual tracks, and then trim the individual tracks.
1-You should have a single-side waveform, consisting of however many tracks are on one sideof the record being restored, loaded into Cool-Edit Pro or Adobe Audition. It will look something like this:

2-Now select the 1st track by left-clicking and dragging the area. Do not try to be too precise infinding the end of the track. It is best to overlap a little bit into the preceding and/or subsequent tracks,so that you get it all (you are going to trim your selection shortly):

3-Click File/Save Selection. You will be prompted for a place to save the file. Name it "01" and put it in the same folder where the large wav. file you are working with is stored. (If you clicked "Save As" instead of "Save Selection," you will windup saving the entire waveform under a different name. I still do this by mistake from time to time). Do not delete anything at this time.
4-Go ahead and do the same for tracks "02," "03," "04," and so on. When you are finished, close the "mother" waveform. You may delete the "mother" waveform at this time, if you are sure that your individual tracks are complete selections. I like to hang onto it for a while until I'm sure I won't need it again. Here, for example, is the 2nd track selected, ready to save:

5-Repeat the process for the "mother" waveform encoding LP Side 2. You will now have saved a bunch of tracks from 01 to 11 or whatever.
6-Open track 01 in Cool Edit or Adobe Audition. You will have a single track that looks something like this:
7-Select the area comprising the lead-in to the song, like this:

Now click the zoom-to-selection button, and you will get something like this:
8-Select the entire area prior to the start of the music, and delete it by pressing the delete button on your keyboard:
Now, in the menu bar at the top of the window, click generate/silence. When the dialog box appears, leave the default 2 seconds in place. Click OK,and 2 seconds of pure silence will appear at the beginning of your track. (Of course, you can put in as much or as little silence as you want, butit's nice to keep it consistent from track to track).
9-Now we will trim the end of the track. Select a small area including the end of the song, making sure you include all of any gradual fade-out:

Note that this selection includes part of the subsequent track. That's okay.
10-Zoom in to the selection. Listen to the passage and determine where ALL musical content stops; let any gradual fade-out play itself down to nothing.Note the spot where the music totally stops. Now, select that point of silence and everything that occurs to the right of it. Delete the selected portion.
You are now done trimming track 01!
11-Save your changes by clicking the "save" icon in the toolbar (or by clicking "save" in the file menu) and repeat the trimming process for the rest of your tracks. You are now ready to go on to Procedure 3. Or,
