1. I will now assume that you have a waveform representing an entire side of an LP, with several tracks, loaded into Audacity. We are now going to break this entire side down into separate tracks and trim each track appropriately.
2. Dragging with your mouse, select the first track in the waveform. Overlap slightly into the 2nd track to ensure that you get it all. Press "File/Export Selection As" and choose a suitable folder, naming the track "01." Be careful that you choose "Export Selection As" and not "Export As," or you will wind up saving the entire waveform repeatedly. Proceed in a similar manner for every track in the waveform (02, 03, 04, etc), making sure that .you overlap the previous and subsequent tracks slightly so that you will be sure of not "coming up short."
3. When you are finished separating and saving the individual tracks, you may close Audacity (responding "No" to the prompt to "save changes"), and then you can go ahead and delete your original "mother" waveform.
4. Re-open Audacity and click File/Load. Navigate to the folder where you stored the separated files. Load file 01. Select a section that includes the silence or lead-in preceding the song. Press control+e, zooming into this selection. Listen to the selection, determining where the track actually begins (usually this can be done visually). Select everything before this point and delete it by pressing the keyboard's delete button.
5. Go to the menu bar and press "generate/silence." The generate silence control box will appear. For some strange reason, the default value in this box is 30 seconds. Change it to 2 seconds and click OK. You will see 2 seconds of pure silence appear as the lead-in to your track.
6. Now press control+f, which will zoom you out so the whole track appears in the window. Select the small portion at the end of the track, including any fade-out, any concluding silence, and any overlapped section of the subsequent track. Listen to this, determining the spot where all music completely stops. Now select everything to the right of this spot and delete it.
7. Your track is now trimmed. Proceed to the rest of the tracks and do the same.
